Foods that Whiten Your Teeth Naturally

TEETH WHITENING 101

Who doesn’t want whiter teeth? Commercial whitening strips sold in drug stores are filled with chemicals and are not regulated at all. They can cause gum damage, and destroy the enamel that protects your teeth. If you want to whiten your teeth but do not want to use harsh ingredients, I would suggest adding these teeth-whitening foods to your daily diet.

APPLES

Not only do apples benefit your health, but they also help to keep your teeth white and bright! Just by simply chewing and eating an apple, it helps to scrub your teeth. Apples contain malic acid which is a natural whitening agent often used in toothpaste. Malic acid increases saliva production which naturally cleans your teeth and helps to remove surface stains (I am talking to you, coffee drinkers).

STRAWBERRIES

Although strawberries are red in color, they contain malic acid which is a natural whitener. You can eat plain strawberries or you can make a paste with blended strawberries and baking soda (leave on for 5 minutes). This is a natural whitening hack that works wonders.  Brush your teeth after applying the paste – try doing this a few times a week to see if it makes a difference for you.

BROCCOLI

To reap the whitening benefits of broccoli you are going to have to eat it raw. This yummy veggie acts as a natural toothbrush that actually cleans your teeth while you munch on it (how cool?!). When eating broccoli, it works by breaking up plaque build-up on your teeth to reveal a more beautiful smile. The iron found in broccoli helps to prevent stains, acid erosion, and bacteria that could cause discoloration. Broccoli is packed with vitamin C and calcium, two nutrients that contribute greatly to oral health.

ORANGES

The trick with oranges is to save the peel for whitening your teeth. The peel is not acidic so don’t worry! The vitamin C in the peel is a great alternative to using harsh whitening strips. Simply rub the white side of the inner part of the peel on your teeth and gums to remove stubborn plaque and tartar build-up. After rubbing the peel on your enamel, brush your teeth as you would and normally. Feel free to do this daily.
